El Cid (Film)

Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was a legendary figure of the Spanish History who lived in the 11th century A.D. He was born in Burgos and died in Valencia in 1099. Nowadays he is considered a symbol of the Reconquista and a defender of the Christian Kingdoms. However, he was most probably a mercenary, who was at the service of both Christian and Muslim kings. He conquered Valencia and governed his own land for years.

This film is not true to his real story, but you will learn some interesting facts about the Middle Ages and have a good time. Enjoy it!

GODS OF THE ANCIENT AGES

Today we are going to draw and colour the GODS OF THE OLYMPUS.

Welcome to the Ancient Ages, where religion is legends, fantastic creatures, collections of human-like gods and lots of fun.

According to Greek mithology, mount Olympus was the home of the twelve principal gods and godesses. The big boss was, of course, Zeus, but there are plenty to choose: the wise and crafty Athena, the clever and witty Hermes, the  beautiful Aphrodite or twin brothers Apollo and Artemis.

Watch the video and choose your favourite from the illustrations. Then print or draw your favourite Greek god, copy the description and colour. It would be great to have all of them for our class wall next year!!

IBERIANS AND CELTS

The IBERIAN PENINSULA was the home of two main cultures along the METAL AGES: The Iberians, in the South-East and the Celts (pronounced kelts) in the North-West, with an area in the centre where both cultures mixed. Watch the video!
In La Rioja there was a mixture of the Iberian and Celt cultures. We house one of the most important and well preserved Celt-Iberian towns: CONTREBIA LEUKADE, near Aguilar de Río Alhama. The warriors of Contrebia Leukade fought the Roman troops lead by general Sertorius in the year 76 B.C.
They lost the battle, but hey, that's the prize of romanization! 😁😁😁😁 Have a look!

THE METAL AGES

Today we enter the last period of Prehistory, the METAL AGES. The Metal Ages start around 6.500 BC (remember, not everywhere at the same time!) and end with the invention of writing, circa 3.500 BC. A mighty new discovery, the use of metal (first copper, then bronze and finally iron) made the world change again: wheels, jobs, trade, horses, war... It's a brand new world!
Watch these videos and dive into the final act of prehistory.

15th May ART PROJECT: MEGALITHIC MONUMENTS

How was your week?
Our next art project will be a MEGALITHIC MONUMENT.

Megaliths were enormous constructions typical of the Neolithic period. All around Europe we can find these impressive monuments erected for purposes that are sometimes quite mysterious. The main types of megaliths are:

-Menhir: They are huge vertical stones stuck into the earth. Historians suppose they were landmarks or commemorative monuments. Remember Obelix carrying a menhir on his back?

-Dolmen: They were basically a massive "stone table", with some vertical stones supporting a horizontal one. They were funerary chambers. Here is a beautiful dolmen you can visit anytime, "El dolmen de la Hechicera". It's just 20 minutes away by car, in Elvillar. A lovely excursion for a Sunday morning!

-Crómlech: They are clusters of horizontal and vertical stones that form circles, sometimes really complex. Historians think they were sanctuaries. Probably the most famous cromlech is Stonhenge, in England.

Too big to keep in your garden? OK, then let's go for a "minilithic monument" Gather some small rocks and create a model of a megalithic monument!

-Use a piece of cardboard as a base to fix the rocks with glue or plasticine.
-Decorate with sand, leaves or whatever you want.
-Write a LABEL describing your work: (for example: DOLMEN / NEOLITHIC / 10000 - 3000 years ago)

Here you can see some "minilithic monuments" created by 1st to 4th grade students last year in my class. Get some inspiration!

YOUR CAVE PAINTINGS

The PALEOLITHIC started with the first HOMO SAPIENS around year 2.500.000 before our age and ended around 10 000 years ago. They were nomads and usually lived on caves or tents they could carry around. Their main source of  food were animals they hunted, so hunting and animals are the main subject of cave painting. Click on the gallery and enjoy the beautiful Paleolithic cave paintings you are creating.
